Community Youth Leadership Camp
A weeklong summer camp at Texas A&M Commerce
Bing Ban AC
As an assistant counselor for Bing Ban, I was in charge of a group of 33 campers. Throughout the week, I led them through leadership activities, arts and crafts, cooking, and taught them chant and dance. I also managed their daily needs such as eating, sleeping, commuting on campus, and maintaining their safety. In the camp-wide Ban competition, my group won first place!

Community Youth Leadership Camp (CYLC), is a boarding camp at Texas A&M Commerce. With over 530 campers, CYLC is split up into 10 班's, or classes, each with about 30 campers led by 6 counselors. During camp, the campers participate in leadership activities, dance, arts/crafts, cooking, team sports, skits, rock climbing, etc. On the third night, there is a formal dinner followed by a dance, and on the last day, the campers have a final performance in front of their parents to show what they have learned and to celebrate the end of camp.
What is CYLC?
The counselor selection process involves submitting an application, writing an essay, and an interview. After being selected, I participated in team-building activities and then went to counselor training for 3 weeks, where we prepared for the camp by writing letters, calling parents, practicing situations, and learning our own counselor dance. On the side, my group of counselors met up to buy materials, built 2 flags for camp, created door tags, and organized our campers' materials.
